We are thrilled to see inclusivity in department stores. We applaud Target for making wheelchair users feel included.
The definition of inclusiveness is an aura or environment of letting people in and making them feel welcome. Not excluding members or participants on the grounds of gender, race, class, sexuality, disability, etc. An inclusive community is one that values individual differences and makes them feel welcome and accepted. We have seen many improvements in inclusivity and diversity in recent years.
A Picture Paints a Thousand Words!
We can write and talk about inclusivity all day, but Ollie Garza-Pena, from the US state of Arizona portrayed exactly why it is so important to include everyone in all areas of our daily life.
A photo of a wheelchair-bound toddler in Target has gone viral and melted the hearts of thousands.
Ollie was born with Caudal Regression Syndrome and is a wheelchair user. While he was in Target with his mother, Ollie stopped and looked in awe at an advertisement of another wheelchair user in the boys clothing section. Ollies mother captured the moment and it has gone viral. She writes:
“He recognized another boy like him, smiling and laughing on a display at Target.
Oliver sees kids every day, but he never gets to see kids like him. This was amazing. I am so happy that other kids that pass through here with their parents will see this.”

Inclusivity at Target
Target first launched inclusive ads in 2017 and has expanded them since then. The retailer, which also sells adaptive apparel, received praise after it unveiled Halloween costumes adapted for children with disabilities.
Well done to Target, they deserve to be applauded for their inclusivity and diversity and we are looking forward to seeing other department stores and clothing ranges follow their lead.
