What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis which has also been known as ‘’porous bone’’ is where you have a low bone mass. The bone tissue is deteriorating and this can lead to fragile bones with an increased risk of fractures to the hips, spine and wrists.
It is estimated that over 70 million people in Europe, Japan and the USA are affected by Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis causes near 9 million fractures a year which means there is an osteoporotic fracture every 3 seconds.
As the world’s population is living longer, the significance of osteoporosis increases, in fact statistics from the international osteoporosis foundation show that by 2050 the worldwide incidence of hip fracture in men is projected to increase by 310% and 240% in women compared to rates in 1990.
Fortunately, Irish scientists from Trinity College Dublin have new information on how light exercise (weight bearing/strengthening exercise) can help boost bone growth, giving way to new possible therapies for bone diseases just like osteoporosis.
What can I do to help increase my bone strength?
Thanks to better health, we have an interesting list of possible exercises to help you.
- Weight bearing aerobics exercise like dancing
- Resistance training with free weights (dumbbells and bar bells), elastic band resistance. We recommend checking this with your doctor.
- Exercise to help improve your posture and balance like tai chi
- Even Swimming – aqua aerobics – it’s not weight bearing but it can help improve cardiovascular fitness and muscle growth.
